The Heron Ensign

The Herons is the name of Hal's brotherband, named after his boat, the Heron. The name stands apart from the usual names of brotherbands in that most brotherbands choose fierce names, such as Wolf or Sharks. This also corresponds with the members of the brotherband, who are outcasts and tend to stand out in some way.

The brotherband are responsible for many amazing feats, including losing and retrieving the Andomal, liberating the town of Limmat from Magyaran pirates, defeating and sinking the pirate, Zavac, outside Raguza, saving 12 Araluens from a life of slavery in the Socorro slave market, helping in freeing the town of Tabork from desert bandit and Hellenes corsair control, destroying a dangerous desert cult of assassins and saving the Araluen princess in the process, discovering the continent that lay far to the west of the Endless Ocean, aiding the Mawagansett tribe in driving off a raiding force of bloodthirsty natives from the north, saving a kidnapped boy Emperor from corsairs and returning him to Byzantos, fighting against the Temujai's return to the Western Kingdoms, resulting in a three year treaty between Skandia and the riders of Eastern Steppes, recovering the Oberjarl's ship, Wolfwind, from the clutches of the Iberians and aiding in bringing down the Red Fox Clan during their revolt.

During the Herons adventures, they were occasionally joined by others who served alongside the crew

  • Gilan - A Araluen Ranger who briefly joined the Brotherband in the expeditions to liberate the Araluen captives of Socorro and to defeat the Scorpion Cult. During his time with the Herons, Gilan serves as a occasional spokesman for the Herons.
  • Olaf Attelson - Stig's estranged father and a disgraced Skandian. After Emperor Constantus was kidnapped by Myrgos's corsairs, Olaf convinced the Herons to assist him and briefly joined the crew, although he was originally distrusted by the crew for how his actions had effected Stig and his family before he eventually gained the respect of the brotherband. After the mission ended in success, Olaf left the Herons.
